OHOKA'S BONDY WINS 2YO FEATURE
Ohoka's Bondy, co-bred by Mosgiel breeder Phil Creighton, who has horses in several NZ stables including the Kentuckiana Lodge team of Cran Dalgety, played the iron horse to win the $A125,000 Premier Suzuki 2YO Golden Skipper Stakes at Gloucester Park, Perth, on Friday night, July 23.
After being left parked outside fellow ex-Kiwi Go West U Terror, Ohoka's Bondy served it up on the home turn and surged half a length clear. Go West U Terror fought back but Ohoka's Bondy held the advantage to win by 1.4 metres.
Go West U Terror (Western Terror-Cosmic Rain gelding) had won six of his previous eight WA starts.
Ohoka's Bondy, formerly with the Mark Purdon/Grant Payne stable and still co-owned by Dave and Katie Carville, was exported after finishing unplaced in the Harness Jewels 2YO Emerald at Cambridge last month. He ran three seconds and a third from 10 NZ starts.
The Bettor's Delight-Asabella gelding is now unbeaten in two West Australian starts for trainer Greg Bond and driver Colin Brown.
Ohoka's Bondy rated 1:57.7 for the mobile 2130m, the leaders running their last 800m in 57.5s and final 400m in 29s.
He is the second foal from Asabella (In The Pocket-Bellisimo mare), who won twice when trained by Mark Purdon. Her first foal is Code Red, who showed promise this term at three for Ohoka trainer Peter Bagrie.
Meanwhile, another former Bagrie-trained pacer in (I'm) Themightyquinn was much too good coming off a 30m handicap to win the $A17,500 Premier Suzuki Swift Sports Conditioned Pace over 2503m on the Gloucester Park programme for the Gary Hall stable.
After moving up in the open a lap out, Themightyquinn surged clear at the end of the back straight and won as he liked by 8.1 metres from Christopher Three and (Our) Mercurio in a 1:57.9 mile rate for the journey.
Themightyquinn was recording his 22nd career win from 51 starts, taking his earnings past the $590,000 mark.
